Monitor Notes: Are You Registered to Vote?

Welcome to Monitor Notes, a weekly roundup of news items, event announcements, and updates on past Bay Area Monitor articles.

Are You Registered to Vote?

There’s going to be plenty to keep track of as we head into the heart of election season, so one thing you’ll want to take care of now is making sure you can actually cast a ballot come November 3. The California Secretary of State is urging residents to check their voter registration status right away. Do so at their My Voter Status webpage, or visit their listing of county election offices to see what local options are available for checking your status.

Caltrain Survey Results

Did you take the Caltrain survey Cecily sent out in the July 1 Notes? Well the results are in, and you can view them here. The main takeaway is that riders plan on returning to the service. Question is, what is the future of that service, which hangs in the balance as elected officials argue over a proposed November sales tax ballot measure to bolster funding for the system. Meanwhile, SamTrans is accepting applications for a new mobility pilot program called Ride Now in conjunction with Serra Yellow Cab. Look for Cecily’s article on these kinds of public-private partnerships in the August Monitor magazine, which publishes next week.

Climate-Ready

Silicon Valley Leadership Group is again hosting its Energy & Sustainability Summit on Friday, August 7, this time on Zoom. Experts like ClimateVoice founder and executive director Bill Weihl (pictured) will evaluate our preparedness to build a zero carbon and climate-ready world. Review the speaker lineup and agenda to see if you might want to join the virtual event. Then revisit the Monitor‘s coverage from when we attended the summit in 2015, back in those days when in-person meetings were all the rage.

And That’s a Wrap

We conclude this month’s Monitor retrospective with the fourth and final article in Leslie Stewart’s history of the publication, a series we originally published in 2014 and 2015 leading up to our 40th anniversary. This last installment covers 1995 through 2005, just prior to the passage of California’s Global Warming Solutions Act and the Great Recession. We hope you’ve enjoyed this little stroll down memory lane, and encourage you to let us know if it sparked any recollections. And if you missed them, part one can be found here, part two here, and part three here.
