Conference Set to Highlight Estuary Issues

On September 17 and 18, the San Francisco Estuary Partnership will hold its 12th Biennial State of the San Francisco Estuary Conference, focusing on the management and ecological health of the Bay-Delta Estuary and showcasing the latest information about the estuary’s changing watersheds, impacts from major stressors, recovery programs for species and habitats, and emerging challenges.

Featuring speakers representing the likes of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bay Area Council, as well as a range of water agencies, municipalities, and universities, the conference will offer such plenary sessions as “Rising Tides — Where Can Our Shorelines Be and What We Can Do About It,” “Drought, Demography, and Conservation in 21st Century California,” “The End of Wastewater: Sustainable Infrastructure for an Urban Estuary,” and “Greener Products for Bluer Waters: California’s Safer Consumer Products Regulations.” Numerous panel discussions are also scheduled on topics including wildlife, nutrients, restoration, and flooding. A reception on the evening of September 17 will allow attendees to mingle among poster presentations and discuss current research.

The conference advances the San Francisco Estuary Partnership’s efforts to share information and resources that result in studies, projects, and programs that improve the estuary and communicate its value and needs to the public. Administrated by the Association of Bay Area Governments, the partnership is a coalition of resource agencies, non-profit organizations, scientists, and concerned residents working to protect, restore, and enhance water quality and fish and wildlife habitat in and around the estuary.

The conference will be held in the Oakland Marriott at 1001 Broadway, off of the City Center BART Station in Downtown Oakland. To learn more information and to register, click here.
